Dump Truck Truck FAQ
What CDL is needed for a dump truck?
Single-axle dump trucks under 26,000 lbs GVWR do not require a CDL. Tandem-axle and larger dump trucks over 26,001 lbs GVWR require at minimum a Class B CDL. If pulling a trailer (such as a pup trailer), a Class A CDL is required.
What is the difference between a tandem-axle and single-axle dump truck?
A tandem-axle dump truck has two rear drive axles, allowing it to carry significantly more legal payload (typically 13–15 tons vs. 6–8 tons for a single-axle). Single-axle trucks are lighter, more maneuverable in tight job sites, and less expensive to buy and operate — best for lighter residential or landscape work.
How do I check the condition of a used dump truck body?
Inspect for cracks and welds along the floor and side walls — cracks spread fast under repeated loading. Check the hydraulic hoist for smooth operation and leaks. Look at floor wear (replaceable if needed) and tailgate operation. Steel bodies are heavier but repairable; aluminum is lighter but harder to weld in the field.
